How Does Concert Festival Work?
Middle School and High School Bands register for our Concert Festival during the school year. Bands select at least two pieces of music to perform for adjudicators. Of these, one must come from a list of selected literature developed by KMEA. The music chosen by directors can be of six different grade levels: Grade One is typically used for first-year players; Grade Two for second-year players; Grade Three for middle school or junior high and less experienced high school players; Grade Four for most high school ensembles; Grade Five for advanced high school ensembles and college or university ensembles; and Grade Six for advanced college, military, and professional ensembles. The performance of each band on stage is assessed by three judges using an established criteria and are given a rating using the following scale:
I Distinguished: Represents A Superior Performance – All basic elements performed on an exceptional artistic level with an accomplished performance and
technical presentation.
II Proficient: Represents An Excellent Performance That Is Outstanding In Some Respects – All basic elements performed on an adequate artistic level with
limited, but noticeable and obvious, performance and technical inconsistencies.
III Apprentice: Represents A Good Performance But Not Outstanding – Areas within one or more of the basic elements are noticeably inconsistent and inadequate.
IV Novice: Represents A Below Average Performance – Areas within two or more basic elements are inadequately demonstrated, with several obvious
technical inconsistencies.
The bands then move to a separate room to read a piece of music they have never seen (optional for middle school bands). They are given a rating on this performance by a fourth adjudicator. Based on the four ratings given, a composite rating is determined. Essentially, if you add the four scores together (ex. I I I I = 4), the composite rating is determined as follows:
Score total of 6 or less = Distinguished Composite Rating
Score total of 7-10 = Proficient Composite Rating
Score total of 11-14 = Apprentice Composite Rating
Score total of 15-16 = Novice Composite Rating
