KMEA Second District Solo and Ensemble Festival
Event Information
The KMEA District-Level Solo and Ensemble Festival is held in the spring each year. Parents and supporters are allowed in the room during the performance if they choose. See our District Events page for specifics.
How Does Solo and Ensemble Festival Work?
Students register events through their director for a nominal fee. They perform alone (solo) or in small groups (ensembles) for an adjudicator. They will be given a rating based on the quality of their performance using the following scale:
I Distinguished: Represents A Superior Performance – All basic elements performed on an exceptional artistic level with an accomplished performance and
technical presentation.
II Proficient: Represents An Excellent Performance That Is Outstanding In Some Respects – All basic elements performed on an adequate artistic level with
limited, but noticeable and obvious, performance and technical inconsistencies.
III Apprentice: Represents A Good Performance But Not Outstanding – Areas within one or more of the basic elements are noticeably inconsistent and inadequate.
IV Novice: Represents A Below Average Performance – Areas within two or more basic elements are inadequately demonstrated, with several obvious
technical inconsistencies.
Students wishing to be considered for State Solo and Ensemble Festival, held in May, need to fulfill the following criteria:
1. Students must select solo or ensemble literature from selective literature lists - links found below
2. Students or directors must complete the State Solo and Ensemble Festival Application - provided by the band director
3. If students choose a work that requires accompaniment, an accompanist must be present and perform at the district level festival event
4. Students must receive a distinguised rating at the district level event and receive a recommendation from the adjudicator
5. Their is an additional nominal fee for students who are recommended and wish to participate in the State Solo and Ensemble Festival
